Our story begins three decades ago when a group of local individuals had a vision: that all women facing an unintended pregnancy would feel supported – no matter what they decide – and not feel judged, to be respected and empowered all while receiving the information they needed to make a confident choice.
In December 1984, the Harrisonburg Pregnancy Center opened to the public and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has grown to provide laboratory quality pregnancy testing, obstetrical ultrasounds, client advocacy, and community resources. We are still growing and continue to expand our services to better empower the clients we serve.
In 2012, we recognized the need to better serve women facing unintended pregnancy by also providing those women with limited sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia – two of the most common STDs. With the desire of expanding services beyond pregnancy, we realized our current name was too limited. In the summer of 2014, we changed our name from the Harrisonburg Pregnancy Center to AVA Care of Harrisonburg. Our new identity embodies the heart of our work – to advocate for our clients, to validate their concerns, and to provide answers to their questions.
In the future, we hope to begin providing free limited STD testing for our pregnancy test clients. As we move forward, we remain committed to the mission that has brought us here today. The core value of supporting women facing unintended pregnancy – no matter what they decide – has and always will stay the same.
